Delegation from the USA has presented its own proposals to European allies for a peaceful agreement between Russia and Ukraine. The US plan was revealed during negotiations in Paris on April 17th. The proposal suggests a de facto freeze of the war, with Ukrainian territories currently occupied by Russia remaining under its control. The US proposal also includes easing sanctions against Russia and discards Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO. Officials emphasized that these plans are not a final settlement and European allies of Ukraine will not recognize its territories as Russian-occupied. Talks will be fruitless if Russia does not agree to cease hostilities, highlighting the importance of providing security guarantees to Ukraine for any agreement. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated that President Donald Trump will reject any attempts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine without clear signs of feasibility. The Kremlin mentioned “progress and developments” in resolving the war in Ukraine but acknowledged there are “many complex issues.” Meanwhile, President Trump expects Russia to respond to the ceasefire proposal for Ukraine as early as this week.
